Departure Check List
- It is important to be aware that foreign currency accounts are freely available in New Zealand. You don't need to change your currency into New Zealand dollars before you leave South Africa, or on arrival.
- Make sure your Retirement Annuities are Paid Up before you leave.
- Make sure your life and disability insurances are in force and pre-paid for a few months while you settle in.
- Remember that you can't purchase Disability Income Protection until you are a permanent resident.
- Insure your container contents in US dollars, not in rands.
- Bring copies of your medical and dental records.
- Bring the history of your house and contents claims, particularly your no-claim bonus records.
Arrival Check List
- Make sure you purchase life insurance very soon after arriving in New Zealand. This will give you immediate protection, making you feel less vulnerable to an unexpected death or disability.
- Long-term uncertainties prevail around holding onto South African-based cover.
- In our experience, the more your money is located where you live and in your control, the happier you will feel.
- Don't be too hasty to purchase a home. Rent while you are aclimatising to the New Zealand market conditions.
Medical Insurance
- You must be aware that a medical insurance policy is different to the South African medical aid plan. It does not cover pre-existing conditions therefore it is important to purchase the policy when you and the family are fit and healthy.
- You are covered by ACC but this is for accidents and emergencies only.
- On a two-year visitors' visa you can purchase Life Assurance, Trauma Insurance and Medical Insurance.
Disability Insurance
- You cannot purchase Disability Income Protection on a work visa and that is why you need to keep your South African cover until you become a permanent resident.
Wills and Family Trusts
- You need to arrange a new Will in New Zealand.
- Your Will needs to be relevant to your new life in New Zealand.
- Consider including the Guardianship of your children if anything should happen to you.
Look into the use of a Family Trust to protect your assets.
Mortgage Planning
- Talk to us about planning a mortgage package that is flexible, and helps you reduce the term and interest paid, giving you significant long term savings.
